Picnics on the Digue

26 August 2026 > 30 August 2026

As part of the ‘Été marseillais’ festival, the City of Marseille and the Marseille Tourist, Leisure and Convention Bureau are organising picnics on the Digue du Large for the first time, from 26 to 30 August 2026, from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Published on 25 August 2026

The Digue du Large opens for a picnic evening

Setting off from the Vieux-Port, hop aboard a boat free of charge to reach the Digue du Large, which is exceptionally open to the public thanks to the support of the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille.

Once there, settle down facing the sea and get your picnic out! Usually inaccessible, the Digue du Large offers a unique setting and an exceptional view of Marseille for the occasion. Each participant simply needs to bring their own meal to make the most of the evening.

On the programme: music, pétanque, games and a chance to socialise, all whilst looking out over Marseille and the sunset. An evening that promises to be as simple as it is unforgettable!

Pack a picnic to enjoy La Digue

Congratulations! You’re one of the participants who’ll be setting off for the Digue du Large to enjoy an evening picnic in this exceptional spot, which is usually closed to the public.
Now it’s time to think about what to pack in your basket! In Marseille, there’s no shortage of choice and, as Vérane Frédiani writes in her book, ‘Marseille cooks up the world’. So why not take this opportunity to move away from the traditional ham and butter sandwich and crisps, and put together a picnic worthy of the name, featuring flavours from Marseille and the Mediterranean?

The Provençal and Marseillais picnic

For a basket full of local flavours, go for a few must-haves: tapenade, anchoïade, panisses, olives, chickpea salad, pissaladière, charcuterie, cheese and good bread. For dessert, a few slices of melon or watermelon will add the perfect touch of freshness for a summer’s evening by the sea.

The Mediterranean picnic

Head to Noailles, the real heart of Marseille, to stock up on flavours from across the Mediterranean. Hummus, tzatziki, aubergine caviar, falafels, keftas and other mezze are perfect for sharing. Round it all off with a cold salad: tabbouleh, Greek salad, itch or méchouia… And why not go for a chakchouka served with some lovely crusty bread to dip into and share?

A quick picnic

Don’t fancy lugging around plates and cutlery? Marseille is brimming with great places to pick up sandwiches, focaccia, panisse and other takeaway specialities. And of course, we can’t forget a Marseille classic: pizza! Good news! There are several places near your boarding point. For a few slices of pizza, pop into Pizza Charly, Chez Sauveur or Ciao Marcello. Fancy a sandwich instead? You’ll also be spoilt for choice with Boulangerie Bagatelle, Pétrin Couchette, Poumpo, Midinette, Pain à l’Ail, Chez Fanny or even Bonne Miette. Fancy a taste of Italy? For focaccia lovers, pop into Santa Gusto, Remo Focaccia or Mio Panino and add a touch of la dolce vita to your shopping basket.
A spot of shopping, your basket under your arm, and you’re all set!

The ready-made picnic

Are you short on time, or is this an impromptu evening out? No problem: caterers, delicatessens and local shops in Marseille can prepare your takeaway meal. Some have even made it their speciality!
This is certainly true of KIF, located not far from the boarding point, which puts together bespoke hampers and canapés. An ideal solution for arriving with almost empty hands… and leaving with everything you need to enjoy the evening.

All you have to do is choose your package, fill your basket and head for the quay. Come on then, let’s set sail!
