What to do in spring in Marseille?

Spring in Marseille is the perfect time to enjoy mild temperatures, almost guaranteed sunshine (fingers crossed) and a vibrant atmosphere that makes you want to make the most of every moment! Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast, a culture fan or simply looking for a stroll in the great outdoors, here is a selection of activities to enjoy Marseille in spring.

1. Explore the countryside in the spring sunshine

Exploring the massifs around Marseille in spring is the perfect opportunity to enjoy nature at its best. From the hills of Garlaban to Sainte-Victoire, via the paths of the Étoile massif, each walk offers a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean and the Provençal countryside. The season’s mild climate makes for pleasant walking, a far cry from the summer heat. Whether you’re a keen hiker or just a stroller, there’s always a trail to suit you – just remember to take good shoes and plenty of water!

2. Treat yourself to your first bath of the year! (For the more daring)

For the brave, spring is the perfect time to take your first dip! The water may still be a little chilly, but it’s still pleasant and invigorating. There are plenty of spots to test your bravery. The Plage des Catalans, close to the town centre, is ideal for a quick dip, while a little further along the Corniche Kennedy you’ll find the more confidential Anse de la Fausse Monnaie, perfect for a peaceful moment by the water. Still on the Corniche, you can take a dip at Plage du Prophète, which is larger and more family-friendly.

3. Stroll around the Old Port and discover the fish market

The Vieux-Port is the beating heart of Marseille. Early in the morning, you can watch the fishermen sell their catch of the day at the fish market, a veritable local institution! It’s there every morning, every day, but the best time to go is early in the morning. On days when the weather is not so kind, there are fewer stalls.
To prolong the pleasure, sit on the terrace for a coffee or pastis, admire the boats and let yourself be carried away by Marseille’s unique atmosphere!

4. Climb Notre-Dame de la Garde and enjoy an exceptional panorama

La Bonne Mère, as the people of Marseilles call it, offers one of the most impressive views of the city and the Mediterranean.
Whether you climb it on foot (a pleasant and challenging 20-minute walk), by bus or by tourist train, the view is well worth the effort. You’ll be able to admire the city from 360°. For early risers, climbing the hill at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. The morning light offers incredible golden hues over the city and the sea. A magical, soothing moment before the city fully awakens.

5. Attend spring festivals and cultural events

Spring is also the season when festivals and events start to appear in Marseille! Here are a few ideas:

  • Marseille Carnival: 25 April 2026 – Old Port
The 35th edition of Marseille’s carnival will take you on a festive blue odyssey, combining a maritime parade, aerial shows and a procession of totem animals guided by Massaliote adventurers.
  • Le Printemps de l’Art Contemporain: 13 to 24 May 2026
A not-to-be-missed event for art lovers, with exhibitions and artistic performances all over the city.
  • The Bon Air Festival: From 22 to 24 May 2026 – Friche La Belle de Mai
The Bon Air Festival is 3 days of electronic festivities in the heart of Marseille, in a venue that is emblematic of urban culture, with a unique atmosphere.
  • Marsatac: 12 to 14 June 2026 – Parc Borely
The electro and hip-hop festival that rocks Marseille every year.

6. Get lost in the Panier district and admire the street art

With its colourful cobbled streets, the Panier district is a veritable open-air museum. It’s Marseille’s oldest district, but also one of its liveliest!
Around every corner you’ll come across incredible street art, charming craft shops and cosy cafés perfect for a gourmet break.

7. Try a culinary speciality

It’s impossible to visit Marseille without trying some of the local specialities!

  • Bouillabaisse, a famous fish dish simmered with spices and accompanied by rouille, is a must in Marseilles cuisine.
  • Aïoli, a Mediterranean dish of cod, steamed vegetables and garlic sauce, is a Friday tradition not to be missed.
  • Panisses and chichis fregis de l’Estaque: when you take a stroll around l’Estaque, be sure to try the unmissable panisses and chichis frégis, two emblematic specialities of Marseille. Panisses, made from chickpea flour, are fried to perfection to give them a crispy exterior and a melting centre, while chichis, long sweet fritters, are served hot, often sprinkled with sugar. A real gourmet break with the flavours of the South, to be enjoyed by the sea of course!

8. Take a boat to the islands of Frioul or the Château d’If

The islands of Frioul and Château d’If can be reached by boat from the Old Port in just 20/30 minutes. This small archipelago of Marseille offers wild nature, crystal-clear coves and historic remains such as the Caroline Hospital. Perfect for a day out away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre!
Just before reaching Frioul, the boat often calls at the Château d’If, a famous fortress built on a rocky islet. Known the world over thanks to Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo, the castle was once a state prison. A visit here will plunge you into the history of Marseille, while offering spectacular views over the city and the sea. A must for history buffs and photo enthusiasts alike!

9. Visit the Mucem and admire its architecture

The Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisation) is a must-see for history and culture lovers. Its spectacular architecture also makes it one of the most popular spots in Marseille!
From its footbridge, you can walk up to Fort Saint-Jean and enjoy a splendid view of the sea.

10. Admire the cherry blossom at Parc Borély

Parc Borély is one of Marseille’s most beautiful green spaces. With its vast lawns, lake and flower-filled paths, it’s the perfect place for a picnic or a family outing.
In spring, the cherry trees and flowers in the botanical gardens are in full bloom, adding to the magical atmosphere. For an original activity, hire a boat on the lake and enjoy the gentle scenery!

Spring is undoubtedly one of the best seasons to visit Marseille. Fewer tourists than in summer, perfect temperatures and a city that comes alive around every corner! So, are you ready to come and enjoy the sunshine in Marseille?
