When should you travel to Marseille?

You’re planning a stay in the Phocaean city and don’t know when to go to Marseille. Thanks to its particularly mild climate and optimal sunshine all year round, you’ll enjoy all these assets, whatever the season. However, we strongly recommend going to Marseille in spring or autumn to enjoy the pleasant temperatures of mid-season and the calm before or after the high season. In summer, Marseille is ideal for its beaches and coves. In winter, the city and its hinterland offer the perfect setting for a rejuvenating stay. Check the weather forecast before you leave to adapt your program on the spot.

Marseille in summer

In summer, during the months of July and August, Marseille welcomes many visitors to enjoy its beaches. From l’Estaque to l’anse du Bain des Dames, Catalans beach, Prophète beach and the Prado beaches, come and lay down your towel for a moment of idleness. Whether you’re perfecting your tan, playing on the beach or indulging in water sports, you’ll never be bored. A dip in the Mediterranean sea will refresh you to endure the summer heat.

In the evening, when the temperature drops, take the opportunity to sit on the terrace of a restaurant in the Vieux-Port or by the sea on the Corniche Kennedy, or curl up in an intimate cove like the Vallon des Auffes to sample local specialties, especially fish.

It’s also in the summer months that you can take part in the numerous events and festivals organized for a festive time: Marsatac festival, Delta Festival, Jazz des Cinq Continents, the Freestyle Cup…. Artists from all over the world come to Marseille to perform and offer Marseillais and tourists lively evenings.

Marseille at mid-season

If you’re not sure where to go in September, head for Marseille! September is the ideal month to enjoy the still summery temperatures in the South, and without the crowds you can continue to head to the beach or to one of the creeks in the Calanques National Park such as the Sugiton or Morgiou creeks for a swim and to polish up your tan before heading back to the office. The Phocaean city is a prime destination for seeing the sun in September.

You can also choose Marseille as your base for seeing the sun in October. You’ll enjoy strolling the streets of Marseille, from the Panier district to Les Goudes, via Cours Julien and the Endoume district. Boutiques, cafés and restaurants and historic monuments will punctuate your stroll.

Marseille in winter

If you’re traveling in January, the still mild winter temperatures will allow you to enjoy a winter stay in the sun, perfect for strolling along the seafront and discovering downtown Marseille. On cooler days, opt for a hike in the Étoile or Garlaban massifs that border the Phocaean city. You’ll get unbeatable views and appreciate this proximity to nature not far from the city. In case of rain, take refuge in the city’s museums: Mucem, Musée Cantini, Centre de la Vieille Charité, Préau des Accoules (children’s museum), Musée Regards de Provence, Musée d’Histoire Naturelle…

Whether you’re looking for where to go in January in the sun or simply a destination where to go this winter in France, you’ll find in Marseille something to satisfy every travel craving and something to occupy your days and evenings, whatever the weather: museum, beach, restaurant, visit to historic monuments, stroll in the parks, shopping sessions in the malls, etc.
