In Marseille, nothing is lost, everything is transformed

In Marseille, second-hand is not a recent trend imported from the big European capitals. It’s part of an older culture of making do, passing on and reusing. Neighbourhood second-hand shops, historic flea markets, upcycling workshops and events dedicated to responsible fashion: the city has a long history of working with what already exists, turning it into a creative field in its own right.

Upcycling, the new generation of responsible fashion

While second-hand fashion has long been part of the Marseilles landscape, a new generation of designers is now reinventing the practice through upcycling. In workshops set up between Cours Julien, Belle de Mai and Le Panier, forgotten clothes, salvaged fabrics and dormant stocks are given a second life in the form of unique pieces. This creative approach often relies on materials sourced from local industry or reuse, making each creation a unique object that is both responsible and tells a story. In Marseilles, upcycling has gone beyond a mere trend to become a veritable field of artistic expression. This dynamic is particularly evident at Slow Fashion Week Marseille, which highlights these local initiatives and promotes fashion that is more sustainable, inventive and rooted in the local area.

A committed Fashion Week accessible to all

If you’re looking for something to do in Marseille in June, Slow Fashion Week is the place to be. For a week, the city will be buzzing with events dedicated to responsible fashion, in an atmosphere that’s both friendly and creative.

More than 50 events take over the city: open-air fashion shows, exhibitions, pop-up stores and conferences take place in different areas of Marseille. The aim is to showcase committed designers who favour upcycling, second-hand products and responsible production methods.

An immersion into the heart of sustainable fashion in Marseille

As well as the catwalk shows, Slow Fashion Week offers a behind-the-scenes look at textile design. Participatory workshops, introductory courses in repairing and upcycling, studio open days: these are just some of the opportunities to understand the challenges and skills involved in more sustainable fashion.

The programme of events will take place in some of Marseille’s most emblematic and sometimes unexpected locations, including the Fort Saint-Jean, the Jardin des Vestiges and the Sainte-Marguerite tramway maintenance and servicing site. It will also provide an opportunity to rediscover the city through the prism of contemporary design.

The BAGA collective, driving responsible fashion in Marseille

The Collectif Baga, which initiated the event, now brings together over 120 brands, designers and professionals committed to more sustainable fashion. Through Slow Fashion Week, the collective has set itself the ambitious goal of making Marseille a French, and indeed European, benchmark for responsible fashion.
After a first edition that attracted nearly 10,000 visitors and over 50 events, this new edition confirms the growing interest in a different way of producing and consuming fashion.
