Our suggestion of Provencal restaurants in Marseille

Marseille’s geographical location is ideal for local, typical seafood dishes. With gastronomic specialities based on olive oil or fish such as bouillabaisse or bourride, the city has plenty to tempt tourists in search of Provençal dishes. Here is our selection of 5 Provençal restaurants to discover during your visit to the city.

Chez Madie les Galinettes

Located on the Old Port, this restaurant serves typical Provencal and regional cuisine. Delphine Roux, chef and owner since 1995, offers authentic and generous cuisine. You can enjoy pied-packets, larks, Provençal daube or her famous clams with thyme– a real treat!

Le Bouchon Provençal

Ideally located on the Old Port, Le Bouchon Provençal has two air-conditioned dining rooms and an elegant terrace shaded by lime trees for fine weather and summer evenings. The restaurant serves tasty, authentic cuisine using fresh produce carefully selected by the chef. The brigade works delicately and simply with the best local produce to make your meal of delicious traditional dishes. The bistro atmosphere means that the menu is regularly renewed according to the season. For starters, we recommend the basket of panisses chips and aïoli, a Provençal speciality. The small Provençal stuffings are perfect for a main course, unless you’re tempted by the beef stew or tuna tataki, one of the many specialities of the house. Our favourite dessert? The pistachio panna cotta with mango coulis!

Chez Fonfon

The origins of Provençal restaurant Chez Fonfon date back to 1952, whenAlphonse Mounier, a kind-hearted Marseillais, transformed the Beau Rivage bar into a restaurant. From then on, the restaurant became world-famous for its fish specialities such as the traditional bouillabaisse, fish in clay and the inimitable bourride. In 1996, Alphonse’s nephew, Roger Pinna, took over the restaurant until 2003, when he handed over to Alexandre and Peggy Pinna. With its inventive, colourful cuisine blending Mediterranean flavours (olive oil, tomato and garlic), the restaurant welcomes families, children, couples and friends to the typical fishing port of the Vallon des Auffes for a moment of suspended indulgence. An address not to be missed!

Le Clan des Cigales

In the heart of Le Panier, Marseille’s oldest district, Le Clan des Cigales is a boutique restaurant serving Mediterranean flavours based mainly on organic produce in the dining room or on the terrace. Dishes are prepared using seasonal fruit and vegetables. Located close to the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisation) and the Old Port, the restaurant is the ideal place to stop off for a bite to eat during your stay in the South of France. On the menu, you can choose from thechef’s cod aïoli, fresh fish fillet (depending on availability) or Marseille sôcisse, a 100% home-made sausage made with star anise and fennel. For dessert, try the homemade tarts, chocolate fondants or gourmet coffee. At the end of your meal, head to the restaurant’s Provençal grocery shop and let yourself be tempted by regional products such as homemade tapenades, Ferrigno sardines andorganic olive oil.
