Discover a peaceful, pleasant district with a multi-faceted identity.

A little history

Known as Saint Menne or Saint Malme until the middle of the 15th century, the district was long linked to Saint-Victor Abbey. From the 9th century onwards, the vast territories of the Saint-Menet district were under the control of the monks of this prosperous monastery. The land was gradually divided up, although Saint-Victor Abbey retained rights over it until the French Revolution.

Over the centuries, this still rural area became covered with estates and fine residences. Château de la Reynarde, a former medieval stronghold converted into a country house in the 17th century and renovated in the 19th century, Château Régis, built by shipowner Louis Régis in the 19th century, and of course Château de la Buzine all bear witness to this prosperous past.

Industrial estates were developed in the 20th century, housing a large number of companies in the industrial, service and logistics sectors. Shops have sprung up near the Valentine shopping centre, where you’ll find shopping arcades, restaurants, major retailers and a cinema.

The area has undergone controlled urban development, with the construction of housing estates and detached houses. In the north of Saint-Menet, houses are scattered among pine forests and accessed via a maze of crossings. Residents benefit from a country atmosphere and a peaceful environment on the outskirts of Marseille.

Château de la Buzine, north of Saint-Menet

“Little Marcel Pagnol passed through the Saint-Menet district to reach Bastide Neuve, his holiday home. He walked along a canal that ran through several properties thanks to a key entrusted to him by Bouzigues, an acquaintance of his father. But the caretaker of Château de la Buzine surprised the Pagnol family and terrorized young Marcel’s mother”. Marcel Pagnol – My Mother’s Castle.

As an adult, Marcel Pagnol acquired the Château de la Buzine and founded a film city there. Completely renovated at the beginning of the 21st century, it houses the Maison des cinématographies de la Méditerranée, temporary exhibitions and numerous cultural events. Surrounding the château, the Parc des 7 collinescovers almost 4 hectares and is a great place to stroll and relax.

The Château de la Buzine can be reached from the La Valentine shopping centre on bus route 51.
