V.S.O.P. is an iconic American jazz quintet that was active from 1976 to 1980.
It brought together five major figures in modern jazz:
Herbie Hancock (piano), Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Tony Williams (drums), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), and Ron Carter (double bass).
With the exception of Freddie Hubbard, all were members of Miles Davis’s legendary quintet, giving this group a unique historical and artistic depth.
The name V.S.O.P. is also a subtle nod to a grade of cognac favored by Herbie Hancock, a symbol of elegance and musical maturity.
