European Heritage Days: exceptional encounters with heritage
Created in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture under the name ‘Open Days for Historic Monuments’, European Heritage Days aim to show as many people as possible the extraordinary richness of our heritage through unique events, unusual visits and exceptional openings.
The best way to protect heritage is to raise awareness of it and ensure that it is accessible. Every year, millions of visitors of all ages gather for European Heritage Days and cross the threshold of exceptional sites and buildings that are usually closed to the general public.
For its 42nd edition, European Heritage Days will be held on Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2025, with the theme of ‘architectural heritage’. These days offer the opportunity to visit monuments and sites that are often exceptionally open to the public.
From Friday 19 September, schoolchildren will be able to take part in the ‘Look up!’ initiative in partnership with the Ministry of Education. This popular event is an opportunity for the public to talk to heritage professionals and discover their knowledge and expertise.
