Located at the entrance to the old port, the 2 buildings of the former sanitary locker still stand on the north quay, just a stone's throw from Fort Saint-Jean and the Mucem! They bear witness to a whole part of Marseille's maritime history and port activity.
Although the sanitary control system in the port of Marseille first appeared during an epidemic in the 15th century, the regulations were put in place on a permanent basis in the 18th century. The organization was spread over several sites in the Arenc, Pomègues, Frioul and Vieux Port districts.
The Consigne, headquarters of the Intendance Sanitaire, was responsible for controlling ships. Built at the entrance to the port in 1719, it was enlarged in 1803 and 1827, and a 2nd symmetrical...
