Where to shop in Marseille's Vieux-Port?

The heart of Marseille in action at the foot of the Canebière, the Vieux-Port is an ideal place to combine tourism and shopping during your holiday. You’ll be spoilt for choice, from temporary markets to souvenir shops and chain shops. What will you fall for?

Markets on the Old Port

Every morning, on the Quai de la Fraternité in Marseille, a fish market takes place on the Old Port from 8am to 1pm. It’s a great opportunity to discover (and buy) seafood freshly caught overnight. Formerly known as La Criée, this is a direct sale from fishermen to consumers. Thanks to its strategic location, this market is a real attraction for visitors, who love photographing the stalls of fish merchants filled with mackerel, sole and octopus. You won’t want to miss this must-see when you go shopping in the Old Port!

From June to September, the summer market brings the north shore of the Old Port to life, with stalls open from 10am to 10pm (or 8pm, depending on the day and month). Open all summer long, day and evening, the market features local artisans selling items that reflect the local produce, the identity of Marseille and Provence in general. It’s the perfect place to fill up on flavours and scents, to pick up beautiful colourful fabrics, inexpensive objects and accessories for the home or to match your clothes.

La Canebière

Along La Canebière, Marseille’s most famous avenue, a number of shops and stalls are holding their own. For example, the Noailles roastery, open since 1927, offers a range of coffees much appreciated by connoisseurs, in a retro atmosphere that appeals to many nostalgics. Then there’s Maison Empereur, potentially the oldest drugstore in France, which blends tradition and innovation in the products it sells: knives, kitchen accessories, lifestyle products, lighting… For six generations, this family-run business has been a favourite with shoppers around the Old Port.

Around the Opéra

The area is becoming a real chic and trendy shopping district, particularly in the little rue de la Tour, renamed rue de la Mode in 1997. This pedestrianised thoroughfare is home to charming designer boutiques selling original items, such as Jitane, a local address for modern women’s clothing, and other fashion and accessories stores that attract window shoppers and lovers of unique pieces. A few steps away, you’ll also find boutiques like SAISON or COS on rue Francis Davso for contemporary and elegant collections. In the adjacent streets and close to the Old Port, you’ll find shops like Uni Store Marseille and LULLI, as well as a host of other ready-to-wear brands and concept stores.

Rue de Rome

Made up of a large shopping street with wide pavements, rue de Rome is one of the fashion districts where young people like to find second-hand items at rock-bottom prices. Whether it’s shoes, clothes or accessories, there’s something for everyone. In one of the adjacent streets, you’ll find a number of historic shops, such as Le Père Blaize, a popular herbal pharmacy established in 1815. The current managers no longer belong to the family of the learned healer, but they continue to share the unique know-how of this veritable Marseilles institution.

Rue Saint-Ferréol

Commonly known as St Fé, rue Saint-Ferréol links La Canebière to Place Félix Baret. It’s home to many famous names, including Zara and H&M, as well as jewellers, cosmetics shops and much more. The place to be for shopaholics. Probably the most popular shopping street in the city, it has a strong following among young people , who often gather here at weekends.

The Centre Bourse

If you’re not much of a street shopper, the Centre Bourse is one of Marseille’s manymulti-brand shopping centres. Located just a stone’s throw from the Old Port, it brings together communities from different backgrounds: local shoppers, visitors from France and abroad, and strollers from the surrounding area. Whatever your tastes and budget, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. These include FNAC, Histoire d’Or, Sephora, Yves Rocher, Jeff de Bruges, Nature et Découvertes and many others. To round off your shopping trip near the Old Port, you can visit the museum of Marseille’s history housed in the shopping centre. A perfect way to combine shopping and culture!
