What to do in spring in Marseille?

Spring in Marseille is the perfect time to enjoy mild temperatures, almost guaranteed sunshine (fingers crossed) and a vibrant atmosphere that makes you want to make the most of every moment! Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast, a culture fan or simply looking for a stroll in the great outdoors, here is a selection of activities to enjoy Marseille in spring.

Published on 31 March 2025

1. Explore the mountain ranges in the spring sunshine

Exploring the mountain ranges around Marseille in spring is the perfect opportunity to enjoy nature in its full revival. From the hills of Garlaban to the reliefs of Sainte-Victoire, including the trails of the Étoile massif, each walk offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the Provençal landscapes. The mild climate of the season makes walking pleasant, far from the summer heat. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply a stroller, there’s always a trail to suit you—just remember to bring sturdy shoes and water!

2. Take a first dip of the year! (For the more adventurous)

For the bravest, spring is the perfect time for a first dive! While the water may still be a little cool, it’s still pleasant and invigorating. There’s no shortage of spots to test your bravery. Plage des Catalans, near the city center, is ideal for a quick dip. A little further along the Corniche Kennedy, you’ll find Anse de la Fausse Monnaie, a little more secluded and perfect for a peaceful moment by the water. Still on the Corniche, you can take a dip at plage du Prophète, which is quite large and more family-friendly.

3. Stroll around the Old Port and discover the fish market

Le Vieux-Port is the beating heart of Marseille. In the early morning, you can watch fishermen selling their catch at the fish market, a true local institution! It’s open every morning, every day, but the ideal time to go is early in the morning. On days when the weather isn’t great, there are fewer stalls. To prolong the pleasure, sit on a terrace for a coffee or a pastis, admire the boats, and let yourself be carried away by Marseille’s unique atmosphere!

4. Climb Notre-Dame de la Garde and enjoy an exceptional panorama

La Bonne Mère, as the people of Marseille call it, offers one of the most impressive views of the city and the Mediterranean. Whether you climb on foot (a beautiful, energetic walk of about 20 minutes), by bus, or on the little tourist train, the view is worth it. You can admire the city in 360°. For early risers, climbing the hill at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. The morning light casts incredible golden hues over the city and the sea. A magical and soothing moment before the city fully awakens.

5. Attend spring festivals and cultural events

Spring is also the season when festivals and events begin to appear in Marseille! Here are a few ideas:

The 35th edition of the Marseille carnival takes you on a festive and blue odyssey,     combining a maritime parade, aerial shows, and a procession of totem animals guided by adventurers from Massali.

A must-see event for art lovers with exhibitions and artistic performances throughout the     city.

Le Bon Air Festival is a 3-day electronic festival in the heart of Marseille, in an emblematic venue of urban culture, with a unique atmosphere.

  • Marsatac: June 13 and 14 – Parc Borely

Electro and hip-hop festival that rocks Marseille every year.

6. Get lost in the Panier district and admire the street art

With its colorful cobbled streets, the Panier district is a veritable open-air museum. It’s the oldest neighborhood in Marseille, but also one of the liveliest! Around a corner, you’ll stumble upon incredible street art, charming artisan shops, and cozy cafés perfect for a gourmet break.

7. Try a culinary specialty

You can’t visit Marseille without tasting the local specialties!

  • Bouillabaisse, the famous fish dish simmered with spices and served with rouille sauce, is a staple of Marseille cuisine.
  • Aioli, a Mediterranean dish made with cod, steamed vegetables, and garlic sauce, is a Friday tradition not to be missed.
  • L’Estaque Panisses and Chichis Fregis: During a stroll through L’Estaque, don’t miss the opportunity to taste the unmissable panisses and chichis frégis, two iconic Marseille specialties. Panisses, made from chickpea flour, are fried to perfection for a crispy exterior and a soft center, while chichis, long sweet fritters, are served piping hot, often sprinkled with sugar. A truly gourmet break with the flavors of the South, to be enjoyed overlooking the sea, of course!

8. Take a boat to the Frioul Islands or the Château d’If

The Frioul Islands and the Château d’If are accessible by boat from the Old Port in just 20-30 minutes. This small Marseille archipelago offers unspoiled nature, coves with crystal-clear waters, and historical remains such as the Caroline Hospital. Perfect for a day of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city center! Just before reaching Frioul, the boat often stops at the Château d’If, a famous fortress built on a rocky islet. Known worldwide thanks to Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo, the castle once served as a state prison. The visit allows you to delve into the history of Marseille while enjoying spectacular views of the city and the sea. A must-do excursion for history buffs and photo enthusiasts alike! Perfect for a day of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city center!

9. Visit the Mucem and admire its architecture

The Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) is a must-see for history and culture lovers. Its spectacular architecture also makes it one of Marseille’s most popular attractions! From its footbridge, you can reach Fort Saint-Jean and enjoy a scenic walk with a splendid view of the sea.

10. Admire the cherry blossoms at Parc Borély

Parc Borély is one of Marseille’s most beautiful green spaces. With its vast lawns, lake, and flower-lined paths, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic or a family stroll. In spring, the cherry treesand flowers in the botanical garden are in full bloom, creating an even more magical atmosphere. For a unique activity, rent a boat on the lake and enjoy the scenery in peace and quiet!

Spring is undoubtedly one of the best seasons to visit Marseille. Fewer tourists than summer, perfect temperatures, and a city that comes alive on every street corner! So, are you ready to enjoy the Marseille sunshine?
