Theater of the Gymnasium

The Théâtre du Gymnase is one of Marseille's leading cultural venues, hosting a varied national and international program of theater, music and dance every year. Its director Dominique Bluzet also runs the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume, Le Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence, and Les Bernardines. The Théâtre du Gymnase is an Italian-style theatre, inaugurated in 1804, in the heart of Marseille's historic district, at the top of the famous avenue de la Canebière. In 2020, following an inspection of the hall (as part of a renovation project), weaknesses were detected in the balconies. In the meantime, for safety reasons, the Gymnase's seating capacity has been reduced to 300 (from the original 695), with the audience seated in the orchestra area only. At the end of September 2021, the Gymnase closed its doors to the public, but will remain open to welcome companies in residence, to enable them to invent and rehearse in the best artistic, technical and hospitality conditions... Special attention will be paid to so-called regional companies. At the beginning of 2025, we'll be opening our bars, VIP lounge, work lounge and speakeasy. Until completion in 2026, programming will take place at the Théâtre des Bernardines, the Théâtre de La Criée and the Opéra.
