A bit of history
Houses and buildings were built over the centuries to accomodate the growing population. During the first half of the 20th century, the Baille district grew, and with it the opening of the shops. The area became a popular place to live, particularly for Marseille’s middle and upper classes.
La Timone hospital initially housed patients from municipal asylum, then students from the city’s medical faculty. In order to bring together care, teaching and research in medecine in one place, work began in the 1970s and will give the buildings we know today. A few years later, a reorganization was carried out, the hospital was reorganised. La Timone hospital became one of the largest emergency services in France.
Today, the Baille district is a lively residential and commercial area. There are many local shops, restaurants, cafes and services. It is well served by public transport, thanks to the presence of several metro stations (line 1 and 2) and bus.
