Baille district

Located in the heart of the 5th arrondissement of Marseille, discover a residential area that is very popular with its residents. Baille district is bordered by districts of Capelette, Castellane, Le Rouet and La Timone. The district is known for being home of several important medical institutions, including the University Hospital Center (CHU) of La Timone, the Conception Hospital and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Marseille, where you can attend conferences, exhibitions or cultural events. This makes it a popular venue for students and health professionals. It is made up of a mix of residential buildings, small houses and local shops. The Baille district is easily accessible thanks to the presence of several bus lines and the Baille and La Timone metro stations, on line 1 of the Marseille metro.

A bit of history

Houses and buildings were built over the centuries to accomodate the growing population. During the first half of the 20th century, the Baille district grew, and with it the opening of the shops. The area became a popular place to live, particularly for Marseille’s middle and upper classes.

La Timone hospital initially housed patients from municipal asylum, then students from the city’s medical faculty. In order to bring together care, teaching and research in medecine in one place, work began in the 1970s and will give the buildings we know today. A few years later, a reorganization was carried out, the hospital was reorganised. La Timone hospital became one of the largest emergency services in France.

Today, the Baille district is a lively residential and commercial area. There are many local shops, restaurants, cafes and services. It is well served by public transport, thanks to the presence of several metro stations (line 1 and 2) and bus.

A lively neighbourhood

Baille is a student district known for its warm atmosphere where it is good to live. The Conception hospital is also adjacent to the Baille district and its main entrance is located on the Boulevard Baille.  

The Baille district is also popular for its proximity to other emblematic places of Marseille, such as the Old Port (10 minutes by metro). It offers a mix of history, modernity and conviviality that makes it an attractive place for locals and visitors. The Boulevard Baille connects the sector Timone to the Place Castellane, where stands the monumental fountain Cantini. This major artery gives the district its name. There is a wide variety of shops and services, such as pharmacies, banks, supermarkets and a large number of restaurants.

Resolutely urban district, Baille also enjoys easy and quick access to the Park of the 26th Century, a large public garden and landscaped appreciated by locals to relax and enjoy nature. This green space brings you an oasis of nature on more than 10 hectares, and even has a small lake. Don’t miss the Tree of Hope, a magnificent sculpture located at the entrance to the park.

The Baille district by public transport

You can easily reach the Baille district by public transport:
– Metro ligne M1  : stations La Timone, Baille et Castellane
– Metro ligne M2 : station Castellane
– Tramway ligne T2 : stop Castellane (terminus)

Several bus lines serve directly the diffeent districts of Marseille to or from Baille:
– La Timone stop: lines 12, 12B, 12S, 40, 52, 54, 72 et 91
–  Castellane stop: lines B1, 18, 19, 41, 50, 54, 73, 74
