Launched by Roland Villalonga, the Grand Prix La Marseillaise marked the return of the professional peloton. In fact, it was sub-named the "Grand Prix d'Ouverture" until 2000. Usually held in late January or early February, it is nonetheless an important date in the cycling calendar. Fifteen to twenty teams from the world's top three divisions, including all the French pro teams, take part every year. Today, the GPLM is the leading professional race of the season in France. Departing from Hôtel du Département, the 171 km route will take riders to Allauch, for the actual start, then Belcodène, Peynier, and Trets, before a passage through the Var to Saint-Zacharie and Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Beaume.
After crossing the Col de l'Espigoulier, the peloton passes Gemenos and the Col de l'Ange, before returning to Marseille via Roquefort-la-Bédoule. From Cassis, the route takes in the Route des Crêtes.
The finish will be in front of the Orange Vélodrome.
