July 14 : Bastille Day in Marseille

Every year, locals and visitors alike take to the streets of the city and the Old Port to celebrate Bastille Day. The evenings are organised so that everyone has a front-row seat to watch the fireworks, which are fired, as usual, over the Old Port and the Fort d’Entrecasteaux. Let’s just hope the Mistral doesn’t join in the fun this year!

The military parade

This year, the military ceremony will kick off at 5pm on the Old Port. The parade will start on the Quai de Rive Neuve and head towards the J4.

In the wake of the fire in the north of Marseille, the city council has chosen to place the 14 July festivities under the banner of solidarity and commitment, in tribute to the victims and the forces mobilised.

Fireworks

This year, the town is promising an exceptional fireworks display. Fired like every year from the Old Port and the Fort d’Entrecasteaux , spectators will be able to admire a majestic fireworks display accompanied by a soundtrack for almost 30 minutes.
The fireworks will start at dusk at around 10.30pm. The Old Port will be completely pedestrianised, and the Pharo Gardens will be exceptionally open from 5.30pm.
To limit the impact on the environment, the parts used to package the fireworks are made from biodegradable materials (paper, cardboard, felt).

Did you know?

The first fireworks display in Europe took place in 1612 on the Place des Vosges in Paris, for the wedding of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria.
It wasn’t until 1880 that it became the flagship event of the 14 July festivities.
