What about travelling lighter?

Choosing a Clef Verte hotel in Marseille

A night in a hotel represents almost 10kg of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere (35% of which is attributed to heating or air conditioning, 23% to breakfast and 17% to laundry) and 178 litres of water (the equivalent of a bath). Knowing that to limit global warming to +2°C in 2050, each inhabitant (of developed countries) should emit only 1.7 tonnes of CO² per year, it is time to rethink the way we travel by directing our choices towards hotels committed to a policy of reducing their environmental impact. With this in mind, the Office of Tourism and conventions bureau and the City of Marseille have decided to support Marseille’s hoteliers in their transition, through a programme to help them obtain the Clef Verte label, in order to offer visitors a range of sustainable accommodation.

What is Clef Verte?

The first international sustainable tourism label for tourist accommodation. The Teragir association has been promoting this French label since 1998. It analyses the practices of candidate establishments on 7 themes, ranging from waste and energy management to CSR and training. Water is, of course, one of the key issues, and this can be tackled through simple measures (reducing the flow of showers, covering swimming pools to reduce evaporation, etc.).

A night in a Green Key hotel means :

  • Protecting the region’s biodiversity and natural and cultural heritage
  • Preserving water resources
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of your stay

The hotel sector has an important role to play in the fight against climate change. By taking part in the programme, hoteliers can have a direct impact on their environmental impact. But then it’s up to you, the customer, to support them by booking your stay.
