Securing slag deposits

South coast of Marseille

For over a century, historical deposits of industrial waste have polluted the coastline of Marseille’s Calanques between the Madrague de Montredon and Callelongue. Known as “slag”, these deposits are found on roadsides, beaches, in nature and sometimes even in the water. ADEME (Agence de l’environnement et de la maîtrise de l’énergie) was commissioned by the French government to treat and secure the sites identified as the most polluted. This historic clean-up project is being carried out by the French government, with financial support from the City of Marseille and other local authorities co-financing the project.

A major project

This safety project, entrusted to ADEMEby the French government, is a major public interest project that has been talked about for many years and is now finally taking shape. The aim of the project is to reduce the environmental impact and health exposure of the population to this pollution.

The following co-financiers: Ville de Marseille, Département, Métropole are all involved in this project, which is led by ADEME. They also sit on a monitoring committee that has been meeting at the Prefecture for several years and includes representatives of local residents, such as the CIQ (local residents’ associations) in the area, and environmental and health associations.

Organisation of the project

The works will start on 1 September 2025 with the construction of the site base and will be carried out in two phases, from September 2025 to March 2026, then from September 2026 to March 2027.

During the first construction period (September 2025 – March 2026) :

  • the deposits to be made safe are located between Saména and the Calanque des Trous, with the exception of the Escalette valley, which will be treated during the 2ᵉ period of works.
  • worksite facilities in the immediate vicinity of the works zones will be set up in the nearest car parks and/or on a traffic lane for certain depots. In these cases, alternating traffic on a single lane will be put in place from Monday to Friday,
  • the Napoléon and Port de l’Escalette car parks will be used to set up the site base and shared facilities.

The second period of works (September 2026 – March 2027) :

  • will mainly concern the deposits located between les Goudes and Callelongue,
  • The location of the associated worksite facilities will be published before the summer of 2026.

Worth knowing

Please note that during the two construction periods, parking will be limited in this area and traffic conditions will be disrupted. Visitors are therefore asked to use public transport to get to the area:

  • Public transport (lines 19, 20, LeVélo stations) is being reinforced, with services running until 11pm and every 20 minutes throughout the year(see the RTM website for more information).
  • Parking zones have been set up for restaurant owners.
  • A parking relief zone will be created above the Napoléon car park.
  • An off-peak parking zone reserved for local residents is being studied in the Maronaise car park.
