Rosé & Côtes de Provence

immersion in the vineyards at the foot of Sainte-Victoire

Today, I’m off to discover the wines of the Aix-en-Provence hillsides… and to spend half a day in the heart of the vineyards of Provence. With its breathtaking scenery, passionate encounters and guided tastings, this experience, departing from Marseille’s Old Port, promises a complete immersion in the world of Côtes de Provence wines.

Departure from the Vieux-Port: heading for the vineyards of Aix-en-Provence

We meet in front of the Radisson Blu Vieux-Port. Our tour guide, Emmanuel, welcomes us and explains the programme. We were a small group of 8 people, ideal for a friendly visit.

In the minivan, he explains the morning’s stops: two wine estates located close to each other, at the foot of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. We soon leave the motorway for winding country roads. The scenery gradually changes: the forest gives way to more open countryside, then the first of the typical Provence vineyards. Along the way, we pass through pretty villages like Peynier, with its discreet but very present heritage.

First estate: simply understanding wine

We arrived at our first domaine to discover the vineyards of Provence. The visit was quick but effective, and I quickly realised that the experience went far beyond a simple tasting. Emmanuel explains the grape varieties (Grenache, Syrah, Rolle), the differences between white, rosé and red wines, and the key stages in the winemaking process.

Faced with the large stainless steel vats, I realise just how important every detail is in the wine-making process. Even without any special knowledge, everything is clear and very instructive. Then it was time for the tasting: five wines to discover, white, rosé and red. Guided through the tasting, we learn to recognise the aromas and how to express them. Berries, citrus fruit, red fruit, honey… the flavours are gradually revealed. It’s a great introduction, both fun and sensory.

A visit to the shop is also an opportunity to discover local products, celebrating the Provençal terroir.

Second estate: panoramic views and great wines

We set off again to reach a second estate, with a breathtaking view of Mont Sainte-Victoire. The place immediately impresses with its beauty.

This is a family estate, where more than seven generations have brought this vineyard to life. These organically-farmed wines are renowned far beyond the region, particularly in North America, and can be found in some of France’s top restaurants.

The winemaking process in particular attracts attention: some of the vintages are matured in Limoges ceramic eggs or oak barrels, an approach that is both technical and innovative.

We then sit down on the terrace, facing the vines. The owner meets us and shares a few words with us, with simplicity and passion. The exchange makes the moment even more authentic.

Four wines are offered for tasting. It’s hard to say exactly what they are when you’re not an expert, but the impression is clear: these are remarkable wines, with a real personality. We understand why it was voted best wine in the world a few years ago!

A real experience

On the way home, the discussions naturally continue around the wines tasted, but also the landscapes crossed.

This visit is also a moment out of time. It’s a place to talk and observe. Whether you’re a wine lover or just curious, everything is designed to make the experience accessible and convivial.
One thing’s for sure: this immersion in the vineyards of Aix makes you want to come back again… and to extend the experience.
