Marseille's 6th arrondissement now boasts a new green space and cultural venue, the Domaine des Sœurs Franciscaines Missionnaires de Marie.
The park run by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary reopens its doors this Saturday, February 17, following extensive redevelopment work. The new green lung of the 6th arrondissement, the estate consists of a building complex and a park of around 11,000 m². It is located in the Vauban district at 5 rue Lacédémone (main entrance), but the renovation has made the park more accessible, with several entrances and access points. This renaturalized park aims to offer multiple uses to all Marseillais, with activities for young and old and the provision of a shared garden. The new plantings have strengthened and perpetuated the pre-existing vegetation on the site, enabling the soil to be maintained independently. What's more, the new plantings have made the garden more shaded and therefore more resilient to rising temperatures. The landscaping was designed to meet the contemporary needs of visitors, while also promoting biodiversity and enhancing the historical heritage of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary. A completely redesigned green space The creation of distinct landscaped areas - two play areas for children aged 3 to 6 and 1 to 12 (seesaw and spring games, slide, manipulative panels, wooden balancing course); - well-tended gardens around the central building, with an ornamental fountain. - groves, sources of coolness in summer, with vegetation protection devices; - a pine forest (classified woodland) to the north of the park. - the undergrowth has been enhanced with shrubs and plants; - a shared "bancaù" garden with fruit trees and aromatic plants. The park also boasts a number of features for relaxation and comfort: - pergolas ; - two drinking fountains and two ornamental fountains; - furniture: 5 picnic tables and stone benches; - dry toilets ; - and pathways for strolling, offering a new space for living and relaxing. New vegetation and extensive planting A varied plant palette - essentially Mediterranean or adapted to the Mediterranean climate - will eventually create new islands of freshness and a veritable green setting in the town center. The shared garden The plot dedicated to the shared garden has been laid out to enable gardening activities within the framework of a collective garden (common plot) promoting social ties, exchanges of experience and education in the environment and sustainable development.
