It is the work of the Swiss architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier.
Built between 1947 and 1952, this imposing structure is 165 metres long by 24 wide by 56 high, and its layout evokes the theme of an urban liner anchored in a park.
Rough concrete, pilings and blind gables combine powerful figures with more sophisticated ones, such as the subtle weave of polychrome loggias, or the superstructures of the flat roof. This plastic richness, typical of the great architect, combines its visual effects with an organization that was exceptional for its time. A laboratory for a new "housing system", the Cité radieuse comprises 337 apartments of 23 different types, providing comfortable accommodation for 1 to 10 people. The "typical" apartment is designed for 4 people. It's a duplex with a large living room, loggia and full-height bay window. This new spatial organization is complemented by numerous "extensions to the home", designed to stimulate a new approach to communal living, including an interior street with stores and a hotel-restaurant. The top level houses a nursery school and gymnasium, which in 2013 became MaMo (contemporary art center).
Finally, the roof terrace offers a relaxation area with a children's pool, play areas and a stage sheltered by a windbreak wall for open-air shows.
Indifferent to the mockery of the "Maison du Fada", its residents are delighted with the Cité radieuse: several apartments are still inhabited by residents from 1952, and many have attracted a wealthy clientele of teachers and architects. It even set an example, as Le Corbusier built other cités radieuses in the 1950s based on the Marseille model (Rezé-Nantes, Firminy, Berlin).
