A world-famous work

Exhibited in the Louvre Museum, the MonaLisa is one of the most emblematic portraits in the history of painting. With her famous smile and eyes that seem to stare back at you no matter where you look, she has become a worldwide icon.

But why is it the most famous painting in the world? It may seem like a simple question, but the varied, complex and surprising answers will help visitors to understand the myth and, above all, the work itself, beyond the false mysteries and clichés.

Playful, sensory rediscovery

The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece through a series of stories and sensory experiences on different levels:

  1. The entire walls of the exhibition space are covered with a “landscape skin” inspired by various works by Leonardo da Vinci, such as the Virgin with the Rocks and Saint Anne. Landscapes taken from these works are composed and interact to create a panoramic universe that enlivens the space, with new graphic textures.
  2. Six very large-format digital projections are positioned along the visitor’s route. Different visual narratives tell the stories, anecdotes, modernity and process that made this painting the icon it has become. Visitors are also invited to take part in a range of activities at each stage of the tour, including ‘touching’ certain works and interacting with play modules.

Leonardo set about painting the portrait of Mona Lisa, his wife, for Francesco Del Giocondo […] it can be said that she was painted in a way that would make any great artist tremble and fear. […] There was such a pleasant smile that it was more divine than human to see, and she was considered a marvellous thing, no different from life.
