The Marseille – Cassis foot race is a famous half-marathon race that has been held every year between the towns of Marseille and Cassis since 1979. It offers a magnificent route along the Mediterranean coast and attracts runners from all over the world. Each year, the race takes place on the last weekend in October. Thousands of participants are expected to cover more than 20km, including 12km in the Parc National des Calanques. The finish is in Cassis, in the heart of the vineyards of Provence. The Parc des Expositions de Marseille (Parc Chanot) is organising a large welcome village over the weekend. The average cost of a race number is €75.

A little history

The Marseille Cassis foot race is an iconic race with a rich history. The first edition of the Marseille Cassis foot race took place on 28 October 1979. The idea for the race came from a group of running enthusiasts who wanted to create a unique event in the region. The course was designed to offer runners a panoramic experience along the Marseilles coast, with spectacular views of the sea and the Calanques.

Initially, the race was relatively modest, with a small number of participants, around 700 at the first edition. Over the years, however, it has grown in popularity and renown, attracting runners from all over France and abroad. Today, the Marseille Cassis race is one of the most popular in France and the world.

The race

The official distance of the race is 20 kilometres, and it is considered a half-marathon due to its hilly profile and steep gradients.

The race’s reputation is largely based on the beauty of its course, which follows the steep coastline, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the cliffs of the Calanques National Park.

The Marseille Cassis race is also known for its festive and friendly atmosphere, with spectators cheering on the runners all along the route. Numerous events and activities are organised around the race, making it a major sporting event in the region. Disguises are permitted for the occasion, provided they leave the face uncovered. Changing rooms are usually available for participants.

Over the years, the Marseille Cassis race has also welcomed some famous runners and been the scene of some exceptional performances. It has become a veritable institution in the world of running. Today, almost 20,000 people take part.
