A religious poem from the Middle Ages, the Stabat Mater evokes the figure of a woman standing before the torment of losing her child. In painting and music, this bruised yet upright body embodies both grief and dignity.
A religious poem from the Middle Ages, the Stabat Mater evokes the figure of a woman standing before the torment of losing her child. In painting and music, this bruised yet upright body embodies both grief and dignity. Grief and dignity are also the essence of flamenco.
From their reading of this work, Marseille-based flamenco artist Ana Perez and guitarist and theorbo player José Sanchez have created a sung, spoken and choreographed musical piece that embodies the power and resilience of the feminine. This three-body architecture gives consistency to this secular version of Stabat Mater, the voices of the body, where movements, colors and rhythms respond to, challenge and merge with each other. The choreographic language, modern and singular, borrows from different styles and eras to carve out a spiritual, sensual and profound flamenco. At once baroque and contemporary.
