A major figure in Gaza photography in the mid-20th century, Kegham Djeghalian Sr (1915-1981) documented the city and its inhabitants for almost 40 years. A survivor of the Armenian genocide, in 1944 he founded Gaza's first professional photographic studio: Photo Kegham. This exhibition, conceived by his grandson Kegham Djeghalian Jr, explores the notion of interrupted histories, using negatives, documents and family mementos discovered in the family's closets in Cairo, revealing the life of his grandfather, but also testifying to a wider memory of Gaza.
Initially focused on the figure of his grandfather, Djeghalian Jr's research gradually opens up to a broader, non-linear reading of Gaza's visual history. By refusing to accept dates and captions, he questions the very nature of the archive, and brings to light the potential of what he calls an unmade archive: an open, unfinished archive that refuses to be closed. His photographic installations sketch out,
an alternative historiography of Gaza.
