The Hospitallers occupied the old chapel of St. John the Baptist, and then undertook the construction of a new church, the hospital and the Commander's palace. The whole complex was completed in 1365. The control of the entrance to the port was ensured by a chain of 226 large rings that linked the two towers of Saint-Nicolas and Maubec.
