2025: The Year of the Sea in France
While the ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface, absorbs nearly 30% of greenhouse gases and generates 50% of the oxygen we breathe, it is under constant pressure.
Every year, 10 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into it - the equivalent of a truck every minute. 150 million tonnes are already stagnating there, 80% of it from the continent. What we see is only the tip of the iceberg: 99% of marine plastics are invisible, reduced to micro-particles scattered in the depths.
It is against this backdrop that a United Nations Conference on the Ocean (UNOC-3) will be held in Nice in June 2025.
The Kraken back in the water
Wings of the Ocean's flagship yacht, the Kraken, is back to mark this special year. This 42-meter three-master will set sail on an awareness-raising expedition along the French Mediterranean coast, with its crew of 23 sailors and volunteers on board.
From port to port, she will make the ocean's voice heard by coastal residents and tourists alike. The committed collective will carry out waste collection and awareness-raising actions to better understand the specifics of local pollution and fight against marine waste. As an expedition vessel, the Kraken also hosts an onboard scientific program to study the interactions between fragmented plastic in the water and living organisms.
At the same time, the contemporary art collective Polymer will be exhibiting on the boat, committed and poetic works of art made from waste collected in nature.
