GR®2013 hiking trail

2013

In Marseille Provence, the spread of urban areas, roads and railways is checked by the Etoile and Garlaban mountain ranges, the Etang de Berre and the Arbois plateau. This Provençal agglomeration is made up of and shaped by the countryside around Aix-en-Provence, Aubagne and Salon-de-Provence; city centres and housing estates; foothills; the Gulf of Fos; the mining valley of Gardanne; and the Nerthe and La Fare ranges.

The GR®2013 hiking trail is a 365-km journey around this area, following in the footsteps of the walking artists who developed the project. One path for everyone: locals, tourists, families, fitness buffs, artists and hikers. Walk for an hour or twenty days, and discover the relationship between natural and urban areas.
“The walk around the Etang de Berre is one of the most interesting you can do in the Marseille region.” Paul Ruat, founder of the Société des Excursionnistes Marseillais, 1899
The Fédération Française de Randonnée (French hiking federation or FFRandonnée) has published a TopoGuide® in coordination with artists from the Cercle des Marcheurs. It contains:

The GR@2013 is :
The GR®2013
365 km
20 days hiking
38 communes
5 regional parks
1 exhibition

Highlights
All year long, artistic events, picnics with views, mapping games and guided walks will take place.
• Martigues: 12-14 April
• Salon-de-Provence: 27 and 28 April
• Aubagne: 7 and 12 May
• Vitrolles: 26-26 May
• Istres: 28-30 June
• Marseille: 12-15 September

Le Palais et le Sentier exhibition
The GR®2013 at the Palais de la Bourse
13 March - 12 May, 10am - 7pm
Free entrance

Discover around ten artistic projects that will take place as part of the GR®2013 project at the Palais de la Bourse.
This exhibition is like a trail paying tribute to the walking artists who planned and mapped the GR®2013. It features archives, artwork, contributions from hikers and work by associated artists. Around ten walking artists explored some 500km, visiting city centres, suburbs, hillsides and valleys, to develop the GR®2013. This hiking trail, which loops around the Etang de Berre and the Etoile mountain range, links town and countryside. This exhibition is an opportunity for hikers to learn more about this trail, a panorama of the region.
Images, myths and photos: all genres are represented. The exhibition brings together photos by the Marseille-based Excursionnistes and Panoramistes, an installation by Bryan Connell, videos by Laurent Malone, maps, sound walks by Radio Grenouille and installations by the SAFI collecive. It also features guided tours in the Palais, run by the walking sculptor Hendrik Sturm.

Radio Grenouille’s sound walks
Discover the GR®2013 to music, with partner radio station Radio Grenouille. The Promenades Sonores (sound walks) will take place at different sections of the trail so participants can discover the trail while listening to music.
www.promenades-sonores.com

Euro Pride 2013

from 10 to 20 of july

Europride is Europe’s biggest and best international LGBT event.
http://europride2013.com/europride-marseilles-2013-mediterranean/

This year, EuroPride comes to Marseille, the mediterranean city with over 2600 years of history. Over the space of 10 days, a programme featuring activist, artistic, cultural and festive events will take place throughout the city, and to crown it all off, in symbolic places such as la Friche de la Belle de Mai and Dock des Suds.
Marseille will be the European LGBT Capital as well as as European Capital of Culture. How could there be a better moment for visibility ?

2013 will be a crucial year for Marseille as it’s European Capital of Culture. EuroPride will put a spotlight on Culture. Activism is often expressed through cultural and artistic expression.

No EuroPride is complete without parties. To satisfy all visitors, the festivities will be diverse, and will fit your every desire and taste…!

Marseille and its region will be an exciting discovery for all visitors. Breathe, live and feel Provence !

OPENING CEREMONY

July 10th, J4 esplanade : 20 years of activism, 20 years of EuroPride.

Built on the historical site of the J4, this esplanade is becoming the hottest place for events in Marseille. This spot is in the midst of being renovated as part of the Euromditerranee project. A slice of the plans for Marseille Provence 2013 will take place here, while the view would take your breath away! You can admire the Mediterranean, intensely blue under a clear sky, because as we all know, the weather’s always fantastic in Marseille!

As you’ve surely understood, never has a concert been more beautifully staged, the site is getting ready to marvel at our celebration. We’re also coming together to celebrate our birthday, as EuroPride is about to blow out its 20 candles. Our esplanade of 15,000 square meters will be the kickoff point for your EuroPride and your visit of Marseille and its environs.

We are going to honour strong symbols of our community, and all the talents that it possesses, everything that has marked our society in the last 20 years. It’s the launch of 11 days and 11 nights, specially concocted for you by EuroPride.

The opening concert is a celebration of EuroPride’s birthday, but also of the new rights that have been gained. On top of this, it’s to also celebrate the advancement of electro music and club culture, which are today recognised by the greater public as arts, and were very early adopted by the gay scene.
Who better than EuroPride for a festive programme dedicated to these ex-alternative cultures, which have become mass culture?

Renowned artists, prestigious godfathers, hot moments, a location to take your breath away, an amazing mix, and solid communication networks will make this opening ceremony the biggest and best place to be, bringing together 15,000 people at the J4.
